Metropolitan’s ministries of compassion are based on the idea that the Great Commission (to proclaim the gospel) and the Great Commandment (to love our neighbors as ourselves) cannot be separated. Good news and good deeds go together. Ministries of compassion reflect the attitude of Jesus Christ who loved the poor and cared for those who needed help. By showing compassion to our neighbors who have real needs, we make visible the love of Jesus Christ. By meeting the real needs of people with acts of unconditional love, we create opportunities for sharing the good news and for making disciples. These refreshing touches of grace have the effect of making the gospel attractive to those who may not otherwise consider it.
Compassion ministries contribute to the development of the church by encouraging spiritual growth in the members. Serving others is a beneficial spiritual discipline as it enables people to develop and use their spiritual gifts. This leads to a deeper level of satisfaction and fulfillment for Christians who give themselves away in service to Christ and to others. For this reason, the church may need the needy as much as the needy need the church. The following are examples of our church’s ministries of compassion which are touching many lives in the community.
- Benevolence Fund: Whenever the church observes Communion, the people make contributions to this fund which is designed to help people in crisis.
Novo Bible Club: Our church leads a weekly Bible club for boys and girls in the Britton Courtyard community near our church campus. This is led by high school students from our church youth ministry in partnership with NOVO Ministries.
Mobile Meals: Volunteers from Metropolitan prepare and deliver freshly cooked, hot meals to senior adults living at home in our immediate neighborhood.
- Project Angel Tree: Every year at Christmas, our people purchase, wrap and deliver Christmas gifts to children whose parents are incarcerated in jail or prison. This is done in connection with the “Little Kids’ Christmas Party” sponsored by members of our church under the leadership of Maurice Ferris.
- Stephen Ministry: This lay caring and shepherding ministry links trained volunteers with people needing emotional support, spiritual guidance, or personal encouragement.
Vehicle Maintenance Group: Volunteers use their mechanical skills to provide free car care for single moms, widows, the elderly, and any others who need it.
WHIZ Kids: Volunteer ministers from Metropolitan Baptist Church serve at risk school children in the inner city through a partnership with an urban church, Olivet Baptist. This tutoring ministry helps grade school kids who need to improve in their reading so that they can improve in all areas of learning.
In addition to the ministries of compassion listed above, our church offers support groups such as DivorceCare, DivorceCare for Kids, Single & Parenting, GriefShare, and Financial Peace University. These ministries are touching the lives of church members and others in our community who need God’s love and care.
Weekday community Bible studies are reaching many women who attend our church, neighboring churches or who do not yet attend church regularly. These Bible studies provide for spiritual growth, friendship and increased understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
